Plant Closing,
Anouncment
CommScope's, president and CO,
Eddie Edwards, March 31, that
they will be closing the Omaha Connectivity Solutions plant
late next year. This has came as no surprise to those that
have or still work for the company. CommScope estimates
it will save $18-22 million dollars a year by closing the
plant. Doing the math
will tell you this equals the health care benefits and a
small wage difference that they do not provide at their
other locations. One could probably best describe this as
corporate greed.
Western Electric the manufacturing arm of the Bell Telephone
Company began construction of the Omaha plant in 1956.
Production started in 1958. At its peak in the early
seventies there were 7700 employees at the plant.
With the break up of the Bell System Western Electric became
AT&T Manufacturing. AT&T spun off the manufacturing part of
it business as a new company called Lucent Technologies.
Lucent followed suite spinning off a company called Avaya.
In a few short years Avaya sold the plant to Commscope which
operated the plant as Connectivity Solutions Manufacturing (CSM).
CSM has a page with a brief history of the
plant here.
